American Civil Liberties Union

Founded in 1920 as the National Civil Liberties Bureau, partially in response to legal prosecutions aimed at individuals accused of Communist sympathies.  In 1940, the ACLU officially barred communists from leadership or staff positions.  Since its founding, the ACLU has remained committed to protecting the Bill of Rights through strategic legal challenges to government policy.
