FAQ Homeland #1

1. What can I do to help protect my family and community?

In the war on terrorism, the American government has developed numerous programs and policies designed to protect its people. But its resources can only defend a certain number of targets before they are stretched too thin and it is up to the American people to make up the difference. Many Americans want to give their time and talents to help protect our nation but simply don't know how to get started. Fortunately, there are so many ways, both large and small, for Americans to help defend themselves that there is a role for everyone to play in homeland security. As a family, make preparations for an emergency and be sure that every family member knows exactly where you will stay and what you will need in case of crisis. Educate yourself about the major issues in homeland security and discuss these issues with your friends and family. Keep up-to-date about legislation pending in Congress and contact your members of Congress to make your positions known. Volunteer for organizations such as the Red Cross or the Salvation Army and receive any necessary training before an emergency arises. Many of these may seem like small efforts, but the cumulative effect of education and civic involvement spread throughout the American population will be a safer and more secure United States.
