Exclusive: FSM’s Smith receives MAJ. GEN. JAMES E. LIVINGSTON AWARD

Lt. Col. W. Thomas Smith Jr. – director of FSM’s Counterterrorism Research Center – has received the MAJ. GEN. JAMES E. LIVINGSTON AWARD "for noble service to country in peace and war, superior leadership and tireless support of the 2010 National Medal of Honor Convention."
Retired U.S. Army Col. Charles P. Murray Jr. (Medal of Honor recipient) presented the award to Smith on behalf of Gen. Livingston (Medal of Honor recipient) and the convention project.

Livingston and Murray are two of 97 living recipients of the Medal of Honor, nationwide. The Medal of Honor (known unofficially as the Congressional Medal of Honor) is the nation’s highest award for combat valor.

Smith – an officer in the S.C. Military Dept.’s Joint Service Detachment – is a former U.S. Marine rifle-squad leader and counterterrorism instructor, who today is an internationally acclaimed military analyst, author, columnist, and war correspondent, having covered conflict in the Balkans, on the West Bank, in Iraq (twice) and Lebanon. His work has appeared in the New York Post, USA TODAY, U.S. News & World Report, CBS News, BusinessWeek, Townhall.com, Human Events, the Middle East Times, and many others. He is a military technical consultant for The New Technology of War, a documentary film series which has aired on The Military Channel.

Smith was recently named, “Honorary Lebanese Soldier” for his international terrorism analysis by the World Council of the Cedars Revolution, which represents the pro-democracy majority in Lebanon and throughout the world.

Smith is the senior information officer for the Medal of Honor Society’s annual convention to be held in Charleston, S.C., Sept. 29—Oct. 3, 2010.

In an equally rare honor, Smith was administered the oath of office for “major” by retired U.S. Navy SEAL Lt. Michael E. Thornton (Medal of Honor recipient) in Oct. 2008. Within five months, Smith was promoted to lieutenant colonel in a ceremony attended by Col. Murray.

The Livingston award was presented at FN Manufacturing (FNM) in Columbia, S.C., Friday.  FNM (the U.S. manufacturing arm of Belgium-based Fabrique Nationale Herstal) which currently produces the majority of M-16 rifles for the U.S. Defense Dept. and 100 percent of all M-249 and M-240 machineguns, among other weapons – also received the award. FNM received the corporate award. Smith received the individual award.
