Welcome to the P.T. Barnum Administration
Dan Gainor, Townhall.com
It’s an era of hoaxes and hucksters. Balloons shaped like 1950s UFOs dominate the skies and missing children out their parents for their stupid stunts. TV news shows are filled with made up news stories and made up quotes about Rush Limbaugh. And instead of the three ring circus, the master of ceremonies tried to bring us all five Olympic rings.
There he stands, under the glare of the spotlight, embracing a phrase claimed to be from the greatest showman of all time – P.T. Barnum. The phrase, you wonder? “There's a sucker born every minute.”
Even if Barnum didn’t say it (and historians dispute the point) the parallels remain. President Barack Obama is a master at pulling the wool over our eyes – a real professional huckster.
He ran as an anti-war candidate and still pushes two wars. But he won’t commit to either prosecuting the wars or withdrawing. It’s like having the circus high wire act perform without a net. Sure it might work, but one mistake gets somebody killed. Suckers. Read article.
1st Amendment in the Age of Obama
Ellis Washington, WND.com
Obama's fascist tactics against a valid voting initiative essentially is saying that black people are too stupid to vote for the people they want, despite the fact that Kinston, N.C., has a population that is 65 percent black.
In the Age of Obama, America is internationally mocked, defenseless, bankrupted and on our knees. Since Jan. 20, America has been in the midst of a bloodless coup d'état fueled by chaos theory, never allowing a good crisis go to waste, and the genocidal ideas of Marx, Mao and Alinsky.
To Narcissist in Chief Barack Obama and his legions of fascist minions, We, the People are the enemy. When Obama says, "I'm just getting started," he is deadly serious. What this means is that every cog of the multi-trillion-dollar machinery we call the federal government will be used to achieve the supreme will of President Obama. The passage of socialist health care and the ratification of the Copenhagen climate-change treaty Dec. 7-18 must be signed into law before the 2010 elections – otherwise Obama will become a one-term wonder.
On this bogus climate-change treaty Lord Christopher Monckton, a respected British scientist and former adviser in the conservative administration of Margaret Thatcher, said:
If President Obama signs the Copenhagen climate-change treaty, he "will sign your freedom, your democracy and your prosperity away forever – and neither you nor any subsequent government you may elect would have any power whatsoever to take it back again.
America, the choice is simple – will it be the constitutional framers or the unconstitutional fascists? Read article.
America’s Obama Obsession - Anatomy of a Passing Hysteria
Victor Davis Hanson, NRO.com
For 30 months the nation has been in the grip of a certain Obama obsession, immune to countervailing facts, unwilling to face reality, and loath to break the spell. But like all trances, the fit is passing, and we the patient are beginning to appreciate how the stupor came upon us, why it lifted, and what its consequences have been.
HOW OBAMA WON
Barack Obama was elected rather easily because, in perfect-storm fashion, five separate trends coalesced last autumn.
1) Obama was eloquent, young, charismatic — and African-American. He thus offered voters a sense of personal and collective redemption, as well as appealing to the longing for another JFK New Frontier figure. An image, not necessarily reality, trumped all.
2) After the normal weariness with eight years of an incumbent party and the particular unhappiness with Bush, the public was amenable to an antithesis. Bush was to be scapegoat, and Obama the beginning of the catharsis.
3) Obama ran as both a Clintonite centrist and a no-red-state/no-blue-state healer who had transcended bitter partisanship. That assurance allowed voters to believe that his occasional talk of big change was more cosmetic than radical.
4) John McCain ran a weak campaign that neither energized his base nor appealed to crossover independents. McCain turned off conservatives; many failed to give money, and some even stayed home on election day. Meanwhile, the media and centrists who used to idolize McCain’s non-conservative, maverick status found Obama the more endearing non-conservative maverick.
5) The September 2008 financial panic turned voters off Wall Street and the wealthy, and allowed them to connect unemployment and their depleted home equity and 401(k) retirement plans with incumbent Republicans. In contrast, they assumed that Obama, as the anti-Bush, would not do more bailouts, more stimuli, and more big borrowing.
Take away any one of those factors, and Obama might well have lost. Read article.
Pakistan Notebook: Impressions from one front in what we used to call the War on Terror.
Clifford D. May, NRO.com
I picked an interesting moment to visit Pakistan: four terrorist attacks in less than a week. The first was at the World Food Programme office here in the capital: five killed. The second was in the Khyber Bazaar in Peshawar: more than 50 killed. The third was at the military’s General Headquarters (GHQ) in Rawalpindi, where Taliban insurgents, armed with automatic weapons, grenades, and rocket launchers, fought for 22 hours. According to government spokesmen, a brigadier, a colonel, and three commandos were killed. More than two dozen hostages were taken, but most reportedly were saved when a would-be suicide bomber was shot and killed before he managed to detonate his vest.
A couple days later, terrorists attacked a military convoy, killing about 40 near the Swat Valley — territory only recently liberated from the Taliban by Pakistani military forces following a difficult and costly battle.
If you look closely, you’ll see a message written in this blood: “You, Pakistan’s so-called leaders, can’t provide food for the hungry or security for the marketplace. Your soldiers and officers can’t even protect themselves. You are useless and weak. You will submit. Or we will destroy you.”
Pakistanis can be remarkably nonchalant about terrorism: They have suffered 129 terrorist attacks in the two years since the assassination of Benazir Bhutto. Since Sept. 11, 2001, at least 5,000 Pakistanis have been killed in acts of terrorism. Read article.
Steady descent into third world
Wesley Pruden, Washington Times.com [April 24, 2009]
Opening a can of worms always tempts a mischief-maker, but it's risky business. That can of worms might turn out to be a can of snakes, like Barack Obama's latest gift to the nation.
The president's on-again, off-again, maybe-he-will and maybe-he-won't decision to punish someone who loosened tongues of Islamist terrorists at Guantanamo suddenly threatens not only the CIA interrogators and Justice Department lawyers, but even members of Congress. Maybe it won't stop there: if the lawyers who offered legal opinions are at risk of punishment for their legal advice, why not the members of Congress who knew what was going on? Why not the secretaries who typed up the transcripts? Why not the interns who fetched the coffee? All were accessories either before or after the fact.
We're on unfamiliar ground now. No president before has sought to punish his predecessor for policy decisions, no matter how wrong or wrong-headed. The loquacious prince of Hyde Park should understand this, having eloquently sounded caution and reason on his inauguration as president.
Some of the Democrats in Congress, eager now to join the mob, will regret what they cry for. Rep. Nancy Pelosi, for one, was a member of the House intelligence committee and sat in on super-secret briefings after Sept. 11. She concedes that she heard about waterboarding but she doesn't remember exactly what she heard. Just like Barack Obama sleeping through 20 years of the Rev. Jeremiah Wright's rabid sermons, Ms. Pelosi dozed through the briefings. Her colleagues on the intelligence panel say they remember her demanding that the CIA do more to get the "intelligence" to prevent another attack.
Obama at Odds With His Own Vision for the World
Michael Barone, Rasmussen Reports.com
Barack Obama, who found time to go on a 24-hour jaunt to Copenhagen on Oct. 2 to seek the 2016 Olympics games for Chicago, apparently cannot find the time for a 24-hour trip to Berlin on Nov. 9 for a celebration of the 20th anniversary of the fall of the Berlin Wall. Well, we all have our priorities, and the president can't be everywhere at once, and Secretary of State Hillary Clinton will surely represent the United States ably in Berlin.
Still, it seemed an odd decision to me -- until I went back and got the speech that candidate Obama delivered on July 24, 2008, to a crowd of 200,000 in the Tiergarten in Berlin. As I reread the text, it struck me that there would be an embarrassing contrast between what Obama said in Berlin 15 months ago and many of the policies he has been pursuing in his nine months as president.
Some conservatives were irritated that Obama introduced himself at the Tiergarten as "a fellow citizen of the world." But before that, he declared himself "a proud citizen of the United States," and of his 46 paragraphs only one was devoted to an apology for America's misdeeds ("our share of mistakes," "times when our actions around the world have not lived up to our best intentions"). Quite a contrast here with the more profuse apologies he has made abroad this year. Read article.
Communism: Nazism With Better PR
Arnold Ahlert, JWR.com
Many aspects of historical perspective are puzzling. But nothing comes close to the one perspective I find the puzzling: if you ask a hundred Americans to name the evilest person they can think of, ninety-nine of them would say Adolf Hitler. Why is this puzzling? Among the 20th century's worst mass murderers, Hitler comes in third — by a mile.
By most historical estimates, Hitler murdered six million Jews and an additional five million others, bringing his total to eleven million. That makes him the "bronze medalist" of 20th century mass murderers. The silver medal belongs to Russia's own Josef Stalin whose total is conventionally put at twenty million killed, although some historians contend it may be twice that number. Either way, "Papa Joe" make Hitler look like an amateur by comparison.
However, both these miserable excuses for human beings are no match for our gold medalist in the category: Mao Zedung.
I suspect it is far too late for most Americans to re-order their historical priorities and give "credit" where credit is due to monsters like Stalin and Mao. It seems that only conservatives were taken aback by White House Communication Director Anita Dunn's professed admiration for Mao Zedung. Had she said she admired Adolf Hitler it may have been another story. But it shouldn't be. Nor should the left's casual dismissal or disdain for those who point out that Anita Dunn worldview is embraced by a number of other government officials who inhabit the Obama administration.
Communism is nothing more than Nazism with better PR. Its track record of atrocities dwarf those of Hitler, and its core philosophy is every bit as repugnant, if not more so.
That anyone in America would even attempt to put "lipstick on this pig" is an unmitigated disgrace. That they can do it with such relative ease — under the banner of "social justice," no less — is truly frightening. Read article.
Free Market Alternative to ObamaCare
Attorney Jonathan Emord, NewsWithViews.com
The cost of medical services rise each year faster than the rate of inflation. There are many reasons for this, but one primary reason, seldom discussed, is the effect of Medicare on those costs. Because any change to the Medicare entitlement brings with it shrieks that the sky will fall, no serious free market alternative has ever been entertained in Congress. Nevertheless, if we are to avoid destroying the American economy by saddling the nation with insurmountable debt, there is but one true alternative to Obamacare and that is a true free market in medical services.
Medicare is the archetypical example of socialized medicine that Obamacare will promote and expand. Under Medicare, insurance carriers under contract with the Center for Medicaid and Medicare Services, lord over physicians and hospitals dictating the kind of care that can be provided and the costs that can be imposed. The limitations on kind of care create a one-size-fits-all approach to Medicine for just about everyone 65 and older. Repeatedly those who are chronically ill fall through the cracks and receive less than optimal care because the carriers hamstring the physicians who dare not deviate from parameters of Medicare covered services or they may suffer a Medicare audit.
Medicare audits are the federal government’s equivalent of the Spanish Inquisition. Because there are no clear guidelines on what constitutes “adequate” record keeping, no physician in the United States can survive a Medicare audit if the carrier wants to recoup monies paid from the physician. There is always a way to construe the record keeping as sub par and to demand reimbursement. Read article.
